Dr. Worst experience with Acetone
Sterilisation
I have used it on travels in various countries for
sterilising my instruments. Actually I have sterilised
everything which could be sterilised by 100% Acetone.
Even at present I am still using it in the operating room
for rapid sterilisation.
Acetone sterilisation is a very old and time-hallowed
procedure for sterilisation. It functions by dissolving the
external membranes of bacteria. It is unfortunate that it is
not officially recognized as a sterilisation agent, although
it seems that it has been used for an endless time. It has
been introduced in the United States by Dr. Drews.

Dr. Drews offered some tips
for the safe and effective use of acetone:
-
Acetone must be used at 100%
concentration.
-
Instruments must be clean and
dry when placed in the acetone.
-
Acetone will kill
Staphylococcus aureus, in less than 5 sec; however, it
will denature the surface of a blood clot without
penetrating it to kill S. aureus inside the clot.
Therefore thorough cleaning of the instruments before
sterilisation is essential.
-
Acetone will not corrode
instruments nor damage sharp edges.
